A $98,000,000 Hong Kong Penthouse with Ocean and City Views | House Tour
Today on Squarefoot, we tour a colourful luxury penthouse (4 BDS, 4 BA) in the cool neighbourhood of Lai Chi Kok.
As you step into the grand entryway, the luxurious chandelier sets the scene for the opulent experience that awaits. The owners cleverly placed the shoe rack in a transitional area, leading guests toward the rooftop and away from the main living space.
The home bar is finished with exposed brick veneers and faux stone, exuding character and flair. By day, it serves as a breakfast bar, and by night, transforms into a stylish drinking spot, complete with a sink, ice crusher, and wine rack, opposite a cosy electric fireplace.
A sleek sliding door leads to the semi-open kitchen, which is well-appointed with ample storage.
The dining area features a table flush against the w...

Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world. It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life.
Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin.
I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight.
To understand how Hong Kong’s housing market turned out this way and see how it’s affecting people’s lives, watch the final episode of Borders Hong Kong.

The dining area features a table flush against the wall, with clever built-in storage underneath the staircase.
Asymmetrical shelves in the living area provide a retro look and frame the TV, adding to the room's unique style.
The first bedroom, with its light wood floors and large built-in wardrobe, is a cheerful space, perfect for children with its pastel blue walls and floral accents. The room also features a large pull-out bed and a cozy spot by the bay window, where one can relax and gaze out at the city.
The ensuite bathroom boasts elegant marble finishes and is well-equipped with a vanity, toilet, and a large tub, all complemented by a rain shower enclosure with non-slip floors.
The guest bedroom comes with a full-height wardrobe, natural wood floors, and plenty of space for a comfortable single bed.
Across the hallway, the simple marble guest bathroom is fitted with a vanity, floating toilet, built-in bathtub, and a full-length mirror that visually enlarges the space.
Venturing upstairs, the space exudes a chic Batman-esque ambience with a sleek, black Lamborghini hood set against a white brick accent wall. A blood-red chandelier dangles from the high ceilings, casting dramatic, gothic hues throughout the space.
The second floor is designed for entertainment, greeting you with a large pool table and intimate, low-hanging track pendant lighting. This area was once a bedroom but has since been transformed by the owner into a social hub. The arcade corner offers a fun retreat for kids, and the warmth of the wood floors pairs beautifully with the brick walls to create an inviting industrial charm.
The panelled wood and glass walls separate the minibar area from another social zone, a floating seating area facing full-height windows that offer partial views of Victoria Harbour.
The third bathroom on this floor includes two side-by-side stalls, a shower, a urinal, a toilet, and a vanity.
The “VIP” room is a showstopper with its enormous curved sectional in bright red. This modular furniture can be rearranged to accommodate more guests, and the room is finished in rich, warm tones with large windows.
The comes with a karaoke machine, adding to the entertainment experience, and the space invites relaxation with its plush armchairs and a handy wine cooler in the corner.
The ensuite bathroom is well-appointed with a large double vanity, rain shower enclosure, and an abundance of mirrors concealing hidden storage. A whirlpool bathtub is the cherry on top, with marble finishes and an opulent chandelier, while windows with shades at the back of the room ensure privacy.
Finally, the rooftop deck is a seamless continuation of the home's luxury, transitioning from astroturf to textured pebbly, rocky tiles. It's outfitted with a ten-seater, a built-in island, and a sink, making it an ideal venue for throwing sumptuous outdoor parties.
Asking price: HK$98 million (~US$12.5 million).

When we were looking for statistics regarding where in the world is the most unaffordable place to live, we came across a study done by the kind folks at Visualcapitalist.com. These guys have ranked the most unaffordable cities in the world. San Diego ranks 7.3, London an 8.2, Sydney-- 11.0, and in second place there’s Vancouver at 11.9. But that’s nothing compared to the top spot-- at 20.8, Hong Kong ranks #1 as the most unaffordable city on the planet. And as you can expect, when you are looking at the most expensive city in the world, it's likely going to contain the most unaffordable neighborhood as well. This is where you will find “The Peak”, and this neighborhood is hands down the most unaffordable place to live. The mansions are exuberant, the apartments lavish, and don't even get us started on all the billionaires that live here (spoiler alert, there’s a lot, and more and more keep moving in with each passing year). Today we take a look at The Peak, and why it’s so pricey, what there is to do in the area, why more and more millionaires and billionaires are moving in, and they astounding amount of security measures that the neighborhood has taken to keep this area as exclusive, and safe, as possible. Let’s take a look inside, and if you are in the market for a home, and like what you see, well, just be warned-- you’d better have saved up a few million… or even HUNDREDS of millions, of dollars.
